It certainly is not the fault of the man himself, but after the disasters of Toronto and last week's Triple Crown Tournament whitewash in England the news that national coach Ken Rutherford will not be seeking to renew his contract with the Irish Cricket Union (ICU) is scarcely a surprise.
After a meeting of its officers and chairmen of its provincial unions, the ICU issued the following statement yesterday: "The Irish Cricket Union has been informed by its National Coach, Ken Rutherford, that he does not wish to seek a renewal of his contract when it expires in September.
"The Union is committed to the concept of a national coach and a small committee is being set up to examine the future role of the post. The committee will report to the Union's executive as a matter of urgency.
"The Union is also keen that an increasing number of fixtures at interprovincial and club level should involve the country's best players and will look urgently at options, including the possibility of a national league. This initiative is in keeping with the Union's Strategic Plan, published earlier this year."
The heavy rain caused havoc to the Whitney Moore and Keller Leinster Senior League programme at the week-end.
On Saturday with the exception of the North County and The Hills encounter at The Nevitt when the sides succeeded in playing 25 overs before play was abandoned, the matches between Malahide v Railway Union, Clontarf and YMCA, and the Munster Reds against Leinster were all called off without a ball being bowled.
In the little play that was possible at The Nevitt North County accumulated a creditable 103 for 2 for the loss of only two wickets with Andrea Botha making an unbeaten half century, and John Mooney 24 not out, before play was abandoned.
Yesterday's matches fared better however with Merrion, after hitting an impressive 252 for 7 in 50 overs defeating CYM who replied with 179 in 37.5 overs, by a faster run rate, at Anglesea Road.
In the Phoenix Park Clontarf, despite the match also being reduced in overs, managed to maintain their outside chances of section A honours when they emerged winners over Phoenix again via the faster run rate rule.
In section B Malahide had an easy seven wickets victory over Rush who batting first managed only 67 with Damien Ryan taking three wickets for just eight runs.
