MOROCCO'S Hicham el Guerrouj broke his second indoor world record in 10 days yesterday by beating Eamonn Coghlan's 14 year old mile record with a time of 3 minutes 48.45 seconds in Ghent, Belgium.

El Guerrouj, who set a 1,500m record in Stuttgart on February 2nd, had few problems with the indoor track's oldest mark, setting out at a furious pace and never faltering as he steadily secured his hold on the record.

Cohlan had set the previous mile record of 3:49.78 in New York in February 1983.

El Guerrot was first scheduled to run a 1,500m on the Ghent track, but meet organisers quickly changed their plans to allow the Moroccan to run his first indoor mile.

The record was all the sweeter since he knew his rival, Noureddine Morceli of Algeria, had already failed six times to improve on Coghlan's time.

Britain's Jamie Baulch, another rising star at 23, confirmed his recent form by winning the 400m in 45.45, beating American Darnell Hall by 1.03 seconds.

Welshman Colin Jackson also comfortably won the 60m hurdle in 7.54 ahead of United States duo Duane Ross and Steve Brown.
