Colaiste Mhuire 1-8 Moyne CS 0-4: A goal two minutes from the half-time break by corner forward Ciarán Lynam proved the decisive score as the home side, Coláiste Mhuire overcame Moyne Community School in their Leinster Colleges Senior Football 'A' championship clash at Cusack Park, Mullingar yesterday.

Without ever hitting top gear, Coláiste Mhuire powered their way to victory and to a quarter-final clash with arch rivals St Joseph's, Rochfortbridge next week.

Initially, Moyne had looked impressive and led by 0-3 to 0-1 by the end of the opening quarter. But that was as good as it got for the visitors, who lost their way thereafter. Indeed, their fourth, and final, point did not arrive until the dying moments of the game.

Missing the injured David Duffy, the home side took a while to settle, but after Seán Whelan had set them on their way, Moyne took a grip on the game with Ciarán Gill, Raymond Galligan and Gary Fitzpatrick putting the visitors in the ascendancy.

However, fine strikes by Robbie Lynch and centre back Greg Crowley restored parity with seven minutes remaining in the opening half.

Whelan tacked on two points before Ciarán Lynam struck for the decisive score. When Moyne goalkeeper Stephen Watters flapped at, and missed, a Gary Lynam centre, brother Ciarán stole in to guide the ball to the empty net.

The writing was on the wall for the Longford students within minutes of the restart as Lynch tacked on a brace of points and then Ciarán Lynam stretched the lead to eight points before Raymond Galligan pulled one back for Moyne at the death.
