Tipperary hurling star Colm Bonnar has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling. The 34-year-old Cashel man won a Minor All-Ireland in 1982, an Under-21 in 1985 and Senior All-Irelands in 1989 and 1991 when his brothers Cormac and Conal were also on the Tipperary team. In 1991 he captained the Cashel team which won Tipperary and Munster Club honours.

A sports officer at Waterford IT, Bonnar made his decision after Tipperary's defeat by Waterford in the Munster senior hurling semi-final on Sunday.

He said: "There comes a time when you have to say stop. It was a big commitment in recent years having to travel from Waterford to Thurles for training. That is hard on my wife and family and there comes a stage when the appetite is no longer there. I feel I would not be able to go on for another year."

Bonnar will continue to play club hurling with Dunhill in Waterford.
