Robbie Keane (left) was picking up the television gizmo and bang goes his cartilage

Robbie Keane (left) was picking up the television gizmo and bang goes his cartilage. Little wonder he asked Mick McCarthy to take him off during Ireland's match against Malta in Lansdowne Road.

But Keane is just one of a long list of "humorous" injuries suffered by football players over the years. Celebrating their League Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley, Tony Adams, the Arsenal captain attempted to hoist goal-scoring team-mate Steve Morrow onto his shoulders. Morrow fell and dislocated an elbow.

Two years ago Aston Villa's Alan Wright was forced to trade in his £50,000 Ferrari for a Rover after developing a knee problem because of the position of the accelerator, while Chic Brodie, the Brentford goalkeeper, suffered an injury which eventually ended his career when a dog raced onto the pitch and felled him. Goalkeeper Dave Beasant even missed several games for Chelsea when he dropped a jar of salad cream on his foot. Clearly it wasn't `Lite'.
