Connacht recovered well after losing their opening day's match against Leinster to win the Interprovincial Boys' Golf Championship at Birr yesterday.

With Irish internationals Sean McTernan and Mark O'Sullivan leading the way, the Connacht boys were far too strong for defending champions Munster yesterday, beating them comprehensively by 7 1/2 to 1 1/2.

McTernan just failed to hold onto his 100 per cent record when he halved his singles match with Martin Poucher. In the foursomes, McTernan partnered his international colleague O'Sullivan to a one-hole victory over Michael Canty and Martin Poucher, while O`Sullivan beat Canty by one hole in the singles.

The Connacht boys led 2 1/2 to 1/2 after the morning foursomes and when they won four of the first five singles matches in the afternoon it was all over.

Leinster looked like they were going to push Connacht all the way when they led Ulster 2-1 after the morning foursomes. But just as they did against Munster on Wednesday, the Leinster boys collapsed in the singles, which they lost 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 to draw the match at 4 1/2 each.

Ireland, represented by Graeme McDowell (Rathmore) and Mark Campbell (Stackstown), won the Nations' Cup in Belgium yesterday. They won the event, which is held on the eve of the Belgian Youths' Championship, with a score of 289, which was seven strokes better than their nearest rivals, Holland.

McDowell had two rounds of 71 for a 142 total, while Campbell shot a 75 and a 72 for 147.
