Young Munster were certainly not pleased at losing their AIB League unbeaten record at Temple Hill on Saturday - certainly not in the circumstances. In a normal situation, you wouldn't bet on Young Munster conceding a penalty try for a collapsed scrum but that was the way the script read from referee Tony Redmond.
Confusion reigned, not alone over this incident but because of the inordinate number of penalties conceded by both sides as the new rules came into play. As a result, this game was only marginally above average despite the willingness shown by both teams to run the ball.
It was a refreshing approach, particularly from Young Munster, but as mistakes abounded and the players found it hard to grasp the thrust of the new rules at such short notice, there was never any chance of this being labelled a classic.
Still, both sides scored a try of high quality and there were many other memorable moments and talking points in an intense struggle.
There was, for instance, the sin-binning of props Des Clohessy and John O'Driscoll late in the game. They followed the same route of Ultan O'Callaghan and Matt Te'Pau before half time, though for a much less clearcut incident.
And of course, the tries helped rival supporters make some sense of the mess. Deputy out-half Frank O'Meara, who filled in admirably for the injured Ronan O'Gara, can take credit for the first scored by Tom Kiernan and it was O'Meara who kicked Constitution's only other first half points with a penalty.
Tom Cregan got the scoring credit for two penalties and Young Munster's opening try to allow them lead 11-8 at the interval but the try only came about through Mike Mullins's brilliant searing run from deep inside his own half.
The second half was as intense even if it didn't provide the same amount of attacking skill.
Young Munster jumped into a 14-8 lead through the boot of Cregan, were pegged back to 1414 when O'Meara struck twice but took the lead again through Cregan.
Unfortunately, they weren't able to hold it as Constitution stormed back in the closing stages and snatched victory with that penalty try which O'Meara converted.
