MEN'S HOCKEY: THREE ROCK Rovers, Glenanne, Annadale and Cookstown all came through their second-sound matches in the Irish Senior Cup over the weekend, with the Ulster club Cookstown having to batten down the hatches as Fingal made a thrilling second-half fightback at the airport.
Going into the match as favourites to advance to the quarter-finals, Cookstown sailed to a 4-1 half-time lead with goals coming from Ireland’s Andy Barbour, Andy Smyth and David Ames.
But dogged Fingal came steaming back into the match in the final half hour with Trevor Parsons, Adrian Sweeney and David Bane grabbing goals and taking the match to, for Cookstown, a perilous 5-4. But the Ulstermen stopped the rot and did enough to travel home without the burden of extra-time.
Following their French indoor trip last week, Rovers came through 3-2 against Bangor, while Glenanne’s trip across the border was also successful with a 3-1 win over the non-senior side North Down.
Those results makes for the pick of the next round of matches as Rovers play Glenanne in Grange Road in what is occasionally a meeting where skin and hair fly. Stephen Butler earned one of Glenanne’s goals with Jonathan Kane netting twice.
Rovers shared the goals around in the seaside resort with Peter McConnell, Patrick Shanahan and Peter Blakeney striking.
Up north the big game between Lisnagarvey and Annadale ended with the visitors to Hillsborough winning 3-2.
Peter Caruth netted twice and Neil Hamilton once for Annadale with Garvey’s two coming from Johnny Gray and Tim Cockram.
The all-Leinster derby between Railway Union and Corinthians finished disappointingly for the Park Avenue side as Corinthians went on a scoring spree, Brian Doherty putting together a hat-trick in the process. David Carson also hit two and Miles Warren one in the 6-2 win.
