CORK CITY'S Cup bandwagon rolled on at Turners Cross yesterday when they advanced to the quarter finals of the FAI Cup with a 4-1 win over St Francis.
Deprived of the services of the injured Mark Herrick and the suspended Patsy Freyne, Cork City boss, Dave Barry, was forced to revert to a 4-4-2 formation.
City started at a ferocious pace and were unlucky not to score after only eight minutes when captain, John Caulfield, put the ball wide following a superb cross from Damien O'Connor.
City did open the scoring after 19 minutes when full back Gareth Cronin put in a perfect cross for centre forward Damien O'Connell to powerfully head home from close range.
They continued to dominate the game but failed to convert any of their numerous chances. St Francis then equalised through Mark Patton after half an hour.
St Francis full back, Noel Griffin, sent in a hopeful ball to the City penalty area and when the home defence failed to clear their lines, Patton raced in to side foot home.
Following that scare, City restored their lead five minutes before the interval when Caulfield headed home O'Connell's cross.
City extended their lead after 73 minutes when converted centre forward Noel Hartigan nearly burst the net with a volley.
Nine minutes before the finish centre half Derek Coughlan toe-poked the ball home for City's fourth.
"Naturally I am delighted with the win. We have been creating chances for the last number of weeks and I always felt confident that we would get back on the goal scoring trail," said City boss, Dave Barry.
