Cork City - 1 Waterford United - 1 Waterford United overcame the disadvantage of having to play with 10 men for the closing 25 minutes at Turner's Cross last night to win a precious point.

Waterford had their outstanding centre back, David Breen, dismissed after 67 minutes, when he was shown the red card for a foul on John O'Flynn as the Cork centre forward was about to score.

The forward ensured Waterford paid the full price when he brought his personal tally of goals to eight from the resultant penalty. Although goalkeeper Dan Connor brilliantly parried O'Flynn's shot, he was helpless as the striker headed in the rebound.

Cork had to battle for their draw as Waterford defended with excellent organisation throughout the game. They looked capable of causing a surprise when they jumped in front after 52 minutes.

The goal was a mistake from goalkeeper Michael Devine. He advanced as Alan Reilly struck a free from the right wing into the penalty area and was then forced to back-pedal in a vain attempt to keep it out, as the ball sailed over his head.

Waterford had grounds for complaint in the opening half when Dan Murray tackled Vinnie Sullivan from behind in the area.
