Cork IT coast to deserved victory

Cork IT 1-12........

Cork IT 1-12 . . . . . . . . . UCD 0-9: Cork IT deservedly beat UCD in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final at Belfield yesterday despite being down a man for over half the game. Their victory over Dave Billings's men sets them up for a tie against UCC next Tuesday when they will try to record a rare victory over their fellow countymen.

In a game that lacked any real competitive edge, UCD managed a brief renaissance in the second half but, with the advantage of an extra man following John O'Connor's first-half dismissal, never put their opponents under any real pressure.

O'Connor was sent off in the 25th minute after picking up his second caution of the game.

This should have galvanised UCD but, already trailing by eight points, it was always going to be difficult. With one third of the first half gone, they were four points down following two frees each from John Gardiner and Aidan Fogarty.
