Cork City - 0 Longford Town - 1: Longford Town scored a dramatic and unlikely win to maintain their outstanding cup record in the quarter-final of the League Cup at Turner's Cross last night.
Longford brought Cork's 10-match unbeaten run to an end with a goal 11 minutes into extra-time in an exciting and controversial contest. Their goal came when Alan Kirby swung a right-wing corner into a crowded penalty area and Andy Myler headed the ball on for Davy Byrne to head to the net from near the far post.
However, the game was dominated everywhere, but on the scoreline, by Cork. Yet, despite their majority possession, the home side found an organised Longford too resourceful in defence.
Cork City only had themselves to blame for, in an explosive closing five minutes, they were given the best opportunity of the night when Stephen Paisley was penalised for a foul on Roy O'Donovan inside the box.
But John O'Flynn's poorly-struck effort was turned aside by Longford substitute Gary Cassin as Cork once again bemoaned their luck. The presence of Cassin in the game led to some heated exchanges on the touchline. He replaced Michael Dempsey when the goalkeeper was stretched off after a suspiciously late challenge from O'Flynn in the 85th minute.
The controversy this, and the penalty decision, generated led to verbal exchanges on the touchline and culminated in the sending off of Longford manager Alan Matthews in added-time of normal time after the intervention of the fourth official.
