Martin Corry today becomes the latest former national captain to retire from international rugby, having politely declined England coach Brian Ashton's offer of a place in his 32-man squad for the Six Nations championship due to be announced tomorrow, writes Robert Kitson.
Corry, 34, was a member of the World Cup final side against South Africa only three months ago but has now decided to call time on his admirable Test career and concentrate on club duties with Leicester.
In common with his friend and colleague Martin Johnson, Corry could have prolonged his England career had he so wished. Instead, after 64 England caps and six Lions Test appearances, he has decided the time is right to step aside in favour of the next generation.
