US Tour rookie Richard Coughlan shot the lowest professional round of his career in the $1.5 million Quad City Classic at the Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois, yesterday, where the former Walker Cup player had seven birdies and one bogey in shooting a final round 64 for an eight-under-par 272 total for the 72 holes.
However, it wasn't enough to propel him into a lucrative to 25 finish, after rounds of 65, 71 and 72, and former US Open champion Steve Jones parred the final seven holes to win the tournament by one stroke from Scott Gump.
Jones began the final round two strokes off the pace but fired a four-under par 66 to claim his first title of the year and eighth of his career.
Jones finished at 17-under par 263, to collect the £186,000 top prize at the £1 million event. Jones, 39, had not won since last year's Canadian Open.
Gump had his best showing since sharing second at the 1991 International. Another American, Kenny Perry, shot a 68 and ended up two shots back at 15-under for his fourth top-10 finish of the year.
