Richard Coughlan failed to match his birdie blitz of the opening day but still performed solidly to add a second-round 71 for a four-under-par 136 midway total in the $1.5 million Quad City Classic at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois, yesterday.
"I'm a little disappointed that I did not make a move," admitted Coughlan, who'd started the day just two shots behind overnight leader Curt Byrum, a player without a win on the US Tour for nine years. However, Coughlan - playing alongside compatriot Keith Nolan, who added a second successive 70 for level par 140 - was set to survive the cut in his ongoing quest to retain his card. Nolan didn't survive to the weekend, but is in the field for the next three tournaments.
As Frank Lickliter fired a second round 64 to attain the early clubhouse leadership on 11 under par 129, Coughlan, who started on the 10th, had just two birdies in his round, at the 18th and the fifth. But the 25-year-old Walker Cup player had back-to-back bogeys at the third and fourth and also bogeyed his final hole, the ninth.
