Derek Courtney overcame the sudden rain at Portmarnock on Sunday to win the Dublin Strokeplay Pitch and Putt championship for the fourth time. The Glenville player carded a three-round total of 150, 12 under par, to tie with Johnny Price (Lucan) after 54 holes.
Then in a three-hole play-off, Price looked to have the early advantage but missed a four-footer at the first while Courtney holed from a similar distance for par. Courtney jumped ahead with a birdie at the second and a half in pars at the third was enough to give Courtney his fourth title.
The intermediate championship also went to tie holes. Joe O'Brien (Portmarnock) - only the first alternate for the championship - took his opportunity to shoot 163 and tie with Tom O'Reilly (Old County). The pair were still tied after three holes and O'Brien went on to win with a par at the fourth. Christy Bowe jnr (Old County) was third on 164.
