US Matsers - Par-three competition: American Ben Crane has been given an extra burden to carry on his Masters debut - the par three jinx.

Crane won the eve-of-tournament par three competition at Augusta with a four-under-par 23 and needed no reminding that no winner of the title has gone on to become Masters champion four days later.

Padraig Harrington failed in his bid to win for a record third time - he was champion in 2003 and 2004 - but he did hole-in-one at the 135-yard final hole for a two-under 25.

It was one of three aces on the hole, the Dubliner being followed by American Arron Oberholser and South African Tim Clark.

Jack Nicklaus played in the event - and played well too.

Although he retired as a Masters competitor last year the 66-year-old six-time champion was cajoled into participating in the event and scored 26.

"I had no intention of playing or even bringing my golf clubs," said Nicklaus. But his grandson Charlie wanted to caddie and so he agreed.

Tiger Woods, on the other hand, did not participate. Two years ago he tied with Harrington, but did not show for the play-off because of "a prior engagement".
