Danegold, fresh from completing a hat-trick over hurdles, proved he can also cut it on the Flat with a comfortable victory in the Ucello II And Ubu III Trophy Handicap (for National Hunt jockeys) at Goodwood yesterday.
Derek Byrne, who had around 500 rides on the Flat before switching codes, settled his partner in last place as Hurgill Dancer set the pace. Making his ground in the straight, the six-year-old took up the running at the point he would usually jump the second-last, at the two-furlong marker.
From that point the race as a competition was over as the 5-1 shot galloped six lengths clear of Pertemps Mission to give Byrne his 16th success on the Flat.
