Trainer Henry De Bromhead is prepared to leave a final call on Sizing Europe’s Christmas target as late as possible.

The former two-mile champion has entries in the Lexus and the Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown, but also has the option of travelling to Kempton on St Stephen’s Day for the King George VI Chase.

A cross-channel trip for the 2010 King George was aborted due to the extended freeze that winter.

“It will be a late call,” said De Bromhead yesterday. “There are a lot of things up in the air, such as what the ground will be like and what the weather conditions will be.”

Sizing Europe is as low as 7 to 1 with some layers for the King George, but one horse definitely aiming for the Lexus is Tidal Bay.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Tidal Bay was runner-up to Bob’s Worth in the Hennessy last time, but a Lexus win would deliver a third success for the trainer after Denman and What A Friend.

“The horse is mad fresh at the moment and is going to run in the Lexus,” he said.

Tidal Bay is rated a 9 to 2 shot for the Lexus by Paddy Power, who have installed Flemenstar as their 2 to 1 favourite. Sizing Europe is a 6 to 1 chance.

Flemenstar is officially the top-rated steeplechaser in Ireland after his defeat of Sir Des Champs and Rubi Light in Sunday’s John Durkan at Punchestown. Peter Casey’s star has been handed a 173 rating by handicapper Noel O’Brien, a couple of pounds ahead of Sizing Europe.

Sir Des Champs is another with a multitude of Christmas options.
