RUGBY NEWS: Girvan Dempsey, one of Ireland's stabilising influences in Sunday's Six Nations opening match against Scotland in Murrayfield, did not take part in training yesterday at Naas Rugby Club with the rest of the Irish squad.

The full back, who has had groin problems for a number of weeks leading into the championship, sat out the light session as a protective measure.

But unlike right wing Shane Horgan, Dempsey is expected to be available for selection when the team to face Italy for its second international match in six days, is announced today in Dublin.

"It is more of a precautionary thing. It (groin) is sore so we are taking no chances with it," said Irish team manager Brian O'Brien yesterday.
