Two first-half goals from Derry City ensured that Galway United have still to win at home in this season's Premier Division campaign. Paul Curran acted as provider for the opening goal in the 22nd minute when he sent the perfect long ball into the path of the in-rushing Gary Beckett who set up John McIvor to score from eight yards.

After 25 minutes, Adrian Cregg appeared to be brought down in the Derry penalty area but without reward, resulting in a mini fracas which referee John Feighery defused.

Derry availed of slackness in the home defence to increase the lead before half-time. Paul Moran sent a deft pass to Darren McCaul, whose downward header went into the net from close range.
