Derry striker Mark Farren flashed his third-minute shot just wide. On 11 minutes Andy Myler's shot was saved by Derry City goalkeeper David Forde, and three minutes later Forde saved John Martin's header.
In the 34th minute Gareth McGlynn's curling shot flew just wide, and Farren headed badly wide in first-half injury time.
Dessie Baker and Myler then combined to put midfielder Alan Kirby through on the Derry goal, only for Kirby's lob to be brilliantly saved by Forde.
Longford goalkeeper Stephen O'Brien denied Derry again on 83 minutes when he superbly saved Farren's low shot.
