Connacht League SF/Mayo 2-14 Roscommon 2-8:Mayo completed their FBD Connacht League campaign with a well-earned victory over Roscommon in Ballinlough yesterday.
It was a victory that was carved out principally by the scoring exploits of wing forward Alan Dillon who landed eight points of his team's total.
Mayo were afforded the luxury of kicking 17 wides as they dominated in crucial areas including around the diamond with Trevor Howley, Peadar Gardiner and Austin O'Malley all in close contention for the player-of-the-match award.
Roscommon, who lost for the third consecutive outing, were sluggish in the early exchanges and again were uncomfortable playing the short handpassing game. Martin Reynolds, David O'Gara and Jonathan Dunning all impressed for John Maughan's men.
Mayo, with Billy Joe Padden operating at full back, fully deserved their 1-6 to 1-2 lead at the break. Roscommon remained competitive and narrowed the gap to just two points early in the second half but Mayo stamped their authority on the game and ran out convincing winners.
Yesterday's Walsh Cup hurling game between Offaly and Down at Mountbolus was postponed because the pitch was waterlogged.
