Mick Doohan collected his fourth consecutive 500cc world championship title when he won the British motorcyle Grand Prix at Donington yesterday. In a two-bike battle with his Honda team-mate Tedayuki Okada, the 32-year-old, who only needed to finish seventh to assure himself of the world championship, was clearly determined to win.

Okada tried everything he knew to sneak past in the dying laps but Doohan was having none of it.

"I think you could see I was not just riding for the points," said Doohan afterwards. "Now that it's all over the rest of the season will just be for fun."

Yesterday's victory gave Doohan his third consecutive British Grand Prix and put him alongside Mike Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini as the only riders in 500cc history to win four straight world titles.

Another record the man from Brisbane is hoping to achieve is the number of race wins in one season.

He emulated Italian legend Agostini yesterday by reaching double figures and two further victories in the remaining four rounds would set a new standard.

Doohan admits he has already fulfilled his main ambition in the sport and believes his imperious form this year is a result of that pressure being off him.

"I have achieved what I wanted in terms of world titles and now I just enjoy what I am doing - that's why I race," he said. "I have a smile on my face - I guess that shows my feelings."
