Drogheda United 2 Limerick FC 0: The home side made all of the early running and almost took the lead with eight minutes gone when goalkeeper Noel Mooney spilled a Shane Robinson cross from the right. The ball ran to Stephen Bradley who pulled his shot wide from 15 yards. A minute later Mark Rooney pulled his strike across the face of goal.
Limerick created their first real chance with 34 minutes gone when Paul Finucane was on the end of a Jamie Nolan cross to flash his header narrowly wide. The final five minutes of the half saw Finucane go close again with another header. The opening minutes of the second half saw the visitors threaten the home goal twice as Robbie Kelleher's header was stopped on the line by Connor and then the same player shot straight at the goalkeeper minutes later.
A goal out of the blue rocked the visitors 12 minutes into the second period when Robinson crossed from the right for Jermaine Sandvliet to power his header past Noel Mooney. United were two up six minutes later when Rooney raced into the box to fire past Mooney at his near post. Exhibition stuff from then on as the Boynesiders eased into the next round.
