Drogheda United's senior players refused to train last Tuesday night and threatened to go on strike in protest at not being paid outstanding signing-on fees and the week's wages they were owed.

However, Drogheda secretary Gerry Kelly said yesterday that the players agreed to return to training and fulfil Sunday's fixture against Waterford United after a meeting with the board and the management of the club.

Kelly said: "We informed them that we are not in a position to pay those outstanding debts at this stage. With guarantees that the board will do everything in its power to ensure that they are paid until the end of the season, the players have agreed to resume training and fulfil the fixture against Waterford."
