St Mary's, Mullingar 4-12 St Peter's, Wexford 0-6: A margin of 18 points left no room for debate in this tie at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow, yesterday, a result which sees St Mary's qualify for the provincial quarter-finals.
Their forward line of Seán Whelan, Eanna Doolin and Kieran Lynham contributed 4-7 from play in a top-class exhibition of full-forward play.
But victory was anchored from midfield by Westmeath senior county panellist David Duffy, who showed his class through his fielding, distribution and scoring.
By half-time a brace of Doolin goals had put St Mary's 2-6 to 0-4 in front.
St Peter's tried gallantly to get back into the match in the third quarter but could not get the goal which might have started the revival.
Instead, Lynam killed off the match with a 44th-minute goal to put his side 3-11 to 0-6 in front. Lynam also scored his side's final goal in the 58th minute.
St Mary's centre back Greg Crowley and St Peter's centre forward Seán Caulfield were shown straight red cards for an incident in the 51st minute.
