Joey Dunlop rides no less than four Honda machines - 125/250/600/750cc - in Sunday's fifth annual Kells Road Races, which will take place on the fast 2.1 miles Crossakiel circuit, 4 1/2 miles from Kells on the Oldcastle road. Wee Joey on his own is enough to guarantee a big crowd, but he will not be a loner in Co Meath with 140 riders entered.
Joey's brother Robert is also listed, along with Adrian Archibald (600cc race winner last year), Owen McNally (125cc race winner), Gary Dynes, Denis McCullough, Welshman Jason Griffiths, and three Jackson brothers from England - Alan, Andy and Tom. James Courtney set a 101.81 mph lap record last year, but the double winner in '98 is still recovering from broken ankles and extensive bruising suffered in a 130mph Isle of Man TT crash in early June and is not yet back in the saddle.
The National Rally Championship moves to Co Clare on Sunday for round nine of the 14-round series. Monaghan's Niall Maguire, with Limerick co-driver Anthony Nestor, has a runaway lead.
Maguire's biggest challenger is recent Sligo winner Daniel Doherty (Donegal) in a similar Subaru Impreza, and this will be his first head-to-head with the championship leader as Maguire did not compete in Sligo.
Sponsored by the Armada Hotel, the Clare rally will be run out of Spanish Point, with 3x3 stages at Lough Burke, Grey Grove Bridge and Doolough Lane.
If you are down Mondelo way over the weekend you will see strange goings on and even things that go bump in the night. It is of course that ultimate nonsense, the 24 Hours Citroen 2CV endurance race. It's quite amazing to watch the little French cars buzzing around the track.
For the first time in 11 years, a women's team will compete. Denise and Jennifer Ryan (Athy), Nellie Travers (Clane) and Jacqueline Taylor of Mondello Park aim to raise a minimum of £4,000 for Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin.
