Leeds and Rangers remained on course for a UEFA Cup quarter-final meeting when the draw for the last 16 of European football's second biggest club prize was made in Switzerland yesterday.

Rangers, under new manager of Alex McLeish, were paired with Feyenoord, while Leeds go up against another Dutch team, PSV Eindhoven.

But with the quarter-final draw also being made, the Scottish and English sides know that if they both win, they will meet in the quarter-finals.

PSV, however, defeated Leeds convincingly the last time the two sides met in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1995/96, and Feyenoord will have the added incentive of knowing that the final is in Rotterdam on May 8th.

In another top clash, in-form French side Lille were drawn against Borussia Dortmund of Germany, two sides eliminated from the Champions League.

Dortmund have won their two previous encounters with French clubs in Europe.

Both Milan sides were given comparatively easy draws, with AC taking on Roda of the Netherlands and Inter paired with under-achievers AEK Athens.

The third Italian side left in the competition, Parma, were left smiling too as they will play surprise package Hapoel Tel-Aviv of Israel, conquerors of Chelsea.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale knows they face a tough passage if they are to make a return visit to Holland for the final at Rotterdam.

"I think it is the most difficult of all the ties possible," Ridsdale said. "They knocked us out the last time we played them, but if we want to progress in this tournament then we have to play against the top teams."
