RACING/Doncaster report: Martin Dwyer, who missed the first day of the Turf season having spent Wednesday night at his two-year-old son Joseph's bedside in hospital, had his spirits lifted when he completed a 577 to 1 double on Aldora and Solomon's Mine at Doncaster yesterday.
Dwyer enjoyed his best season with 103 winners in 2002 and said: "Joseph was rushed to hospital with a hernia on Wednesday, but they weren't able to operate because he had just had chickenpox.
"I stayed the night with him and that is why I wasn't here yesterday, but fortunately, while he still needs the operation, he is going to be all right, thank God."
Dwyer had Aldora handily placed on the far side in the Freephone Stanley Spring Mile (Showcase Handicap), and when he asked the Mick Ryan-trained filly to quicken approaching the final quarter-mile she picked up in good style.
She struck the front with a furlong and a half to run and soon clear of the field, she was perhaps better value than the one and a half lengths winning margin she had over the runner-up J R Stevenson.
Ryan was represented by his son John, who said: "Aldora improved over the winter and is a tough mare. We had hoped she would get in the Lincoln and were going to give her a run on the all weather first.
"But when it looked as if she would miss the cut, we decided to bring her here fresh for today's race and it has worked out well - it is a good way to start the season and she is rewarding our patience with her now."
Dwyer sent Solomon's Mine into the lead with over three furlongs to race in the Jimmy Fitzgerald Handicap and the Mark Polglase-trained gelding saw out the two and a quarter miles without flinching.
Traytonic bolted in under apprentice Amir Quinn in the puntersmate.com Maiden Selling Stakes, but it was not all wine and roses for trainer Bill Turner who has the knack of producing very speedy early two-year-olds.
He trains Traytonic for his wife Tracy and he said: "I was going to have a massive punt on him but I quartered my bet after Gameset'N'Match was well beaten in the Brocklesby here yesterday."
Champion Kieren Fallon and three other jockeys, Neil Callan and apprentices Ryan Moore and Dominic Fox were suspended for one day (March 31st) for not riding to their draw in the Mexborough Maiden Stakes.
Tyrone Williams was suspended for two days, March 31st and April 1st, for careless riding on Consensus in the Tile Depot Yorkshire Bluebell Wood Hospice Stakes.
