Lorcan Wyer was suspended for 10 days by the Southwell stewards yesterday for riding a finish a circuit too soon on The Toaster in the Skegness Handicap Chase. Wyer returned to boos and verbal abuse from punters, packed around the unsaddling enclosure, after his faux pas on the second favourite in the four-runner race, run over two and a half miles.
Wyer got down to work on The Toaster at what he thought was the second last fence and administered a few sharp backhanders to put his mount in front just before the finishing line - seemingly not realising that there was another circuit and seven fences to go.
Kate Milligan's 13 to 8 shot faded quickly out of contention from the fourth last and finished a weary last of the three finishers, beaten more than a distance by the winner Prerogative - the 8 to 1 outsider of the party.
Wyer was highly embarrassed by the incident and said afterwards: "I dropped a clanger, and if there was anything I could do about it I would. But, unfortunately, I can't. Perhaps the heat is affecting me," he added referring to the scorching sun.
Milligan was philosophical about the incident. "It is one of those things, but I think 10 days is a bit harsh. You could not say for sure that the horse would have won, but he would have been thereabouts."
Wyer's ban takes place on August 23rd, August 25th-30th inclusive and on September 1st, 3rd and 4th.
