A closing round of 34 points gave Denis Maher overall victory in the inaugural Fingal golf classic held over the Portmarnock Links, St Margaret's, Luttrellstown and Hollystown courses. The event, which attracted over 300 entries, proved highly competitive with 10 players still in contention for the top prize going into the last day. However, after rounds of 39 points at Luttrellstown, 40 at Hollystown and 41 at St Margaret's, Maher's 34 points was enough to give him a one-shot win over Sid Harmon, with Pat Beere claiming third place, five shots behind the winner.
The contest for the overall team section proved to be equally exciting. Going into the final round at Portmarnock Links, Pat O'Donnell and Don O'Mahony held a slender lead over a cluster of teams. However, despite shooting a closing 44 points, they were amazingly pipped on a countback by Paul Mulready and James Walsh, who closed with 48 points. The best overseas players were Patrick O'Driscoll senior and Patrick O'Driscoll junior from South Wales, who totalled 166 points for their four rounds.
