GRAND SLAM OF GOLF:ERNIE ELS hit top form over the back nine to claim victory at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda yesterday. The South African carded three successive birdies after the turn to come home one stroke clear of American David Toms at Port Royal Golf Course.
Els, whose birdies at 14, 15 and 16 wiped out a three-shot deficit to Toms, completed his final round at two-under-par 69, for a total of five-under overall.
The 41-year-old Els only earned his call-up to the four-man Grand Slam tournament – which pits the year’s major winners against each other over two rounds – after US Masters champion Phil Mickelson withdrew.
Toms, the replacement for British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, finished four-under overall, clear of US Open champion Graeme McDowell and PGA champion Martin Kaymer of Germany, who each finished at three-over-par 145.
