Cricket One-day International England v AustraliaEngland, making the most of changing weather, secured another one-day victory over Australia at Headingley yesterday in the first international played with the use of substitutes other than for fielding.
With England chasing 220 to win, a century opening stand between Andrew Strauss and Marcus Trescothick gave the reply impetus as the cloud that had hung over the Australian innings lifted, leaving more sedate batting conditions.
Strauss was finally caught behind off Brad Hogg for 41 and became the first wicket taken by a substitute. Trescothick went on to pass his half-century from 71 balls and his century, with nine fours and a six, shortly before the match was won by nine wickets with almost four overs in hand. Michael Vaughan hit the winning boundary, to finish on 59.
Earlier Adam Gilchrist made 42, Damien Martyn 43 and Michael Hussey an unbeaten 46 of Australia's 219 for seven.
Generally, though, they had struggled against the England seamers with Steve Harmison outstanding and Paul Collingwood once more demonstrating his versatility, taking four for 34 with his enthusiastic medium pace.
For the duration of the Australian innings the Headingley pitch, playful under its blanket of low cloud, was at its most skittish, the ball jagging about manically at times and swooping and diving as it carried through to Geraint Jones, required yesterday to add gymnastic ability to his improving wicketkeeping skills.
There was no let-up for batsmen, which makes the 46 not out from 52 balls of Hussey, who has taken on the mantle once worn so brilliantly by Michael Bevan, all the more commendable.
