Abbeyleix Golf Club, one of the best nine-hole courses in the country, are to expand to 18 holes. The 104-year-old club, the only nine-hole course in Co Laois, is set to join the other four in the county with 18 holes.
The members voted by an overwhelming majority at a recent special general meeting to expand their course by purchasing and leasing land adjacent to their existing nine. "The new land is ideally suited for golf," said club president Kevin O'Brien. "The dry undulating land with water readily available will allow for the construction of a top class course which will be a challenge for all levels of golfers."
The club is presently seeking designs from professional golf architects and the final design is expected to be ready for work to begin later this year.
