Racing: Arakan gained handsome compensation for an unlucky run at Goodwood last time out with an emphatic victory in the VC Bet City Of York Stakes on the final day of the Ebor meeting.

The heavily-backed 11 to 4 favourite - from 4 to 1 - had finished fifth in a Group Two contest at the Sussex venue after being denied a clear run from two furlongs out.

There were no such problems in this £35,000 Listed event as Kieren Fallon bided his time on Michael Stoute's charge before delivering the five-year-old to hit the front inside the last of the seven furlongs.

Quito threw down a strong late challenge but Arakan was always holding him and landed the spoils by three-quarters of a length to end a losing run stretching back to June of last year.

Stoute was represented by Coral Pritchard-Gordon, who said: "That's not before time but the fast ground was perfect for him today and he got a run.

"He was very unlucky at Goodwood but Kieren made sure he got a run today and he said he even got there a fraction too soon. You couldn't have asked for better than that."

Mick Kinane, who rode fourth-placed Jedburgh, was banned for one day (August 29th) for careless riding.

La Cucaracha came with a telling late run to land the Group One VC Bet Nunthorpe Stakes.

The Barry Hills-trained filly burst through down the centre of the track and just kept on to deny the fast-finishing The Tatling.

Majestic Missile ran a blinder to be third, but hot favourite Chineur could never get on terms after falling out of the stalls.

Michael Hills, the trainer's son, had La Cucaracha settled in the pack as early leader Boogie Street set a strong pace and he started his move on the 7 to 1 shot around two furlongs out.

She quickly got her nose in front and despite The Tatling's last-gasp effort, La Cucaracha just had a little bit more in reserve to win by a head, with Majestic Missile a further length away.

Tawqeet's impressive victory in the Melrose Handicap earned John Dunlop's colt quotes ranging from 33 to 1 with totesport and Paddy Power, to 20 to with Coral and the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger and that could be his next target.

The son of Kingmambo sported a visor for the first time as his trainer believed he had "been keeping a bit to himself" and the headgear clearly worked as the 11 to 2 chance overcame a slow start to trounce his rivals.

He soon made up the leeway going well and after hitting the front two furlongs out, he came readily clear to beat Glistening by four lengths under Richard Hills.

"We've found he misses the break and Richard really had to roust him along for the first couple of furlongs to really get him going," said Dunlop, who was saddling his third winner of the three-day meeting.

Fresh from booting home Sergeant Cecil in the totesport Ebor, Alan Munro was back in the winner's circle after steering Momtic to a narrow success in the Persimmon Homes Handicap.

The jockey always had the 5 to 1 shot racing up with the pace as firstly Little Jimbob and then Flipando made the running.

Momtic battled his way to the front over a furlong out and then was kept at full stretch by Elliots World before holding on by a neck.

Fallon was suspended for one day (August 29th) after being found guilty of careless riding on fourth-placed Eden Rock.

Trainer John Oxx, owner the Aga Khan and Kinane teamed up to take the European Breeders Fund Galtres Stakes for the second year running.

They won it 12 months ago with Tarakala and this time it was Kastoria, who obliged for the trio.

The 6 to 4 favourite had to be strongly ridden to get the better of the front-running Albahja by half a length.
