GAELIC GAMES:CORK WERE crowned All-Ireland minor A women's football champions in Birr yesterday afternoon after scoring a thrilling 5-15 to 4-11 victory over Dublin.
Tara Maguire scored a hat-trick of goals for the Rebelettes, who recovered from a sluggish start to win the minor crown for the first time since 2007, and seventh in all.
It was a great game at the Offaly venue and Cork were worthy winners in a tie marked by nine goals. Maguire may have top-scored for Cork but Emma Farmer received the player-of-the-match award.
Farmer, wearing number 14, was superb at midfield and centre forward as her hard-running caused endless problems for the Dublin defence. The Aghada star finished with five points from play and helped to drag Cork back into contention after they fell 0-0 to 1-2 behind with nine minutes on the clock.
Meanwhile, Tipperary will play beaten Ulster finalists Tyrone in next weekend’s second round of qualifiers in the All-Ireland women’s senior football championship.
Tipperary, managed by Derry Peters and Libby Grogan Murphy, overturned last year’s qualifier defeat against Clare with a comprehensive 3-13 to 1-6 victory against the National League Division Three champions in Birr yesterday afternoon.
Full forward Trisha Hickey scored 1-8 for Tipperary on a memorable afternoon, but it was Maireád Morrissey who claimed the player-of-the-match award after scoring 2-2.
