ALEX FERGUSON has set Cristiano Ronaldo a revised target of 25 goals from his injury-hit season after the player scooped what is expected to be the first of a series of individual honours when he was named FifPro player of the year yesterday.

On the back of his 42 goals in United's double-winning season it was hardly an unexpected choice, and as the man who persuaded Ronaldo to remain at Manchester United it was fitting Ferguson should hand over the prize.

"I still think he will beat 25," Ferguson said. "It is going to be difficult because he has had a stop-start beginning to the season."

The Bolton Wanderers captain Kevin Nolan has leapt to the defence of the beleaguered Gary Megson after travelling supporters at White Hart Lane abused the visiting manager on Sunday as his side slipped to defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The away fans broke into a chorus of "You don't know what you're doing" midway through the second half. The abuse became more personal, and Megson was barely able to suppress his disgust - lip-readers could decipher his reaction - and refused to comment on the chants after the game.

Nolan said: "As a player and as captain, I can say that all of the players are right behind the manager. It was always going to be a tough game coming to Spurs but we've struggled a bit and the fans' reaction should be thrown at us as players, too.

"We're all behind the gaffer."
