FIC opt for a change of name

The Federation of Irish Cyclists (FIC) decided to change its name to the Irish Cycling Federation at its a.g.m

The Federation of Irish Cyclists (FIC) decided to change its name to the Irish Cycling Federation at its a.g.m. in Malahide on Saturday. There was surprisingly little resistance to the motion from Dermot Dignam of the Clann Brugha club and it was passed by 58 votes to three with five abstentions.

When there were three bodies in Irish cycling, the ICF was one of them along with the NCA and NICF and after a spell when the Tripartite Committee was in control the FIC was formed in 1987. The decision comes into effect immediately but the new title will be phased in during next year and will be firmly in place by 2000.

There was a poor attendance. Of 122 registered clubs only 43 were represented by 66 delegates.

With Jack Watson, Peter Thornton, Paddy Griffin, Sean O'Callaghan and Pat Clarke unopposed their elections just had to be ratified.

Watson stays as secretary with Thornton, who showed a surplus of £60,170 after expenditure of £416,611, still treasurer.

Pat McQuaid, the president, had come in for some criticism because he was too busy to provide the expected leadership on important matters. That situation has been resolved with McQuaid to work for the federation on the international scene and Dignam was appointed chairman of the board with full responsibility for the day-to-day running of ICF affairs.
