Although backboned by the sextet who helped Ireland attain the runners-up position in last month's European Boys' team Championship in Holland, there are five newcomers to international competition in the team selected yesterday for next week's Boys' Home Internationals in Portmarnock.

Eoin Arthurs, Clancy Bowe, David Gannon, Brian McElhinney and Richard Kilpatrick, winner of last week's Ulster Boys' title, have been called into the 11-strong team to make their debuts.

Ireland finished last in last year's corresponding championship, but hopes are considerably higher this year - especially after last month's Europeans where the Irish team of Conor Doran, Kenny Fahey, Philip McLaughlin, Derek McNamara, Martin McTernan and David Ryan were only denied in a rain-marred final by Scotland.

Ireland (Boys' Home Internationals, at Portmarnock, August 9th-11th): E Arthurs (Forrest Little), C Bowe (Tramore), C Doran (Banbridge), K Fahey (Connemara), D Gannon (Co Louth), R Kilpatrick (Banbridge), B McElhinney (North West), P McLaughlin (Ballyliffen), D McNamara (Connemara), M McTernan (Co Sligo), D Ryan (Grange). Reserve: R McCarthy (Forrest Little).
