RACING:VETERAN CO Dublin trainer Peter Casey hit the national headlines with his exuberant celebration of Flemenstar's previous Grade One success and is now aiming his star at a possible second top-flight victory of the season in Sunday's Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse.
Flemenstar was the big name among a dozen entries left in the €90,000 novice prize and Casey confirmed his intention to run in the two and a half mile event.
“This has been the plan for him all year; he is in great form at the moment, he did his final piece of work at the Curragh this morning and all went well,” Casey said. “We will be keeping an eye on the ground as obviously we don’t want it too quick.”
Flemenstar has been installed a 5 to 4 ante-post favourite for Sunday by Paddy Power. Ground conditions at Fairyhouse yesterday were “good” with more watering likely tomorrow.
Rathlin, a Grade winner at Naas last time, looks likely to be a major threat to Flemenstar, while also left in are the Willie Mullins duo of Call The Police and Bishopsfurze.
Noel Meade has left in the Flyingbolt winner Donna’s Palm, famously owned by the Grand Alliance Racing Club, and Perfect Smile. Meade has also got the option of running Ipsos Du Berlais in the Grade Two Coolmore Sires Novice Hurdle on the same card, a race that has also attracted the County Hurdle winner Alderwood.
“He does need a bit of ease in the ground and we probably won’t run him unless its soft. We’ll just have to monitor the situation,” Meade said of Ipsos Du Berlais who was pulled up at the Cheltenham festival.
“He got bottled up coming past the stands, we don’t know why, but he has come back well and is in good form,” he added. Sunday’s other Grade Two is the mares novice hurdle in which champion trainer Willie Mullins has both Theleze and Ceol Rua.
