The forthcoming football series between the Defence Forces and the New York Gaelic football team underlines the inestimable contribution of military personnel to the GAA, according to the president of the association, Joe McDonagh. He was speaking at McKee Barracks in Dublin at the launch of the new representative series which will be played annually. And the Defence Forces have selected an experienced panel for the matches, scheduled for Gaelic Park in New York on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.
"I'd like to express my gratitude to the Defence Forces for the extraordinary contribution made to Gaelic games and to also acknowledge the wonderful leadership of Monty Moloney, the president of the New York board," he said at yesterday's luncheon.
McDonagh was welcomed by the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lt Gen Dave Stapleton, who announced details of the initiative along with Moloney.
The New York squad, who face Mayo in the Connacht championship this year will be managed by former Donegal player Leslie McGettigan. The Defence Forces are viewing this series as an opportunity to boost its participation in Gaelic games, while New York look upon the games as valuable championship preparation.
The Defence Forces team is managed by former Mayo stars Sean Finnegan and Kevin McStay along with Richie Coffey of Cork. Ciaran Carey of Mayo will captain the side and Seamus Prior will officiate at both games.
