THE DEATH occurred on Saturday morning of former Irish Timesfootball writer Frank Johnstone. He was 80.
Frank, who also worked for the Sunday People, had been ill for a number of months.
A founder member of the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland in 1960, he served as president of the organisation between 1966 and 1968.
He joined The Irish Timesin 1947 after playing with Bohemians in the League of Ireland. He spent 10 years with the paper, during which he covered Ireland's 2-0 friendly victory over England at Goodison Park in 1949.
Frank's most recent contribution to the paper was an Irishman's Diaryin 2006, in which he recalled that famous day. It can be read at www.irishtimes.com.
He moved to the Peoplein 1957, where he covered football and golf. He wrote for the paper until the early years of this century.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, sons David and Keith and daughter Gail.
A funeral service will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday at St Patrick’s Church, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
