Cushendall Ruairi Og 2-16 Ballycastle McQuillan’s 1-15

A storming second half performance from defending champions, Cushendall saw them retain their Antrim Senior Hurling Championship title with four points to spare over Ballycastle at a sunny Dunloy yesterday.

With 40 minutes gone, Ruairi Og trailed by nine, but a goal from Donal McNaughton flipped this game on its head with a second major from Eoghan Campbell eight minutes later helped Cushendall drive on for victory.

Aided by a stiff breeze in the opening half, it was Ballycastle who made the brighter start and hit the first five scores and dictated the pace of the game as they led by two approaching half-time. They then hit a purple patch in the final five minutes with Stephen McGarry, Ciaran Clarke, Stephen McAfee and Shane Jennings all pointing before Clarke picked the pocket of Martin Burke and passed to Saul McCaughan who buried the ball into the net with a minute to play in the opening period to give Ballycastle a 1-11 to 0-5 lead.

The sides traded points early in the second half as Cushendall - now backed by that breeze - started to take control and substitute Donal McNaughton cracked home a goal after being set-up by Sean McAfee.

This breathed life into Cushendall whose tails were now up and points from Neil McManus and Paddy McGill cut the gap to four.

Tiernan Butler did respond at the other end, but the tide had turned and after points from Shane McNaughton and McManus, Cushendall were level when McGill’s deft flick set Conor Carson clear to gallop in on goal, pass to Campbell who found the corner of the net.

Christy McNaughton gave the holders their first lead but this was cancelled out by Caolan McCaughan.

Still, Cushendall were making a break for the line and hit three of the next four scores to lead by two as the game moved into injury-time.

There was time for some late drama as Ballycastle went in search of a winning goal and were millimeters away from getting it when Clarke’s shot was batted up in the air by Eoin Gillan. Shane Jennings got his stick to the loose ball but it came back off the crossbar with Gillan beaten and the danger was cleared as Conor Carson fired over from the breakaway. Neil McManus then hit a late free to seal Cushendall’s victory as they claimed the Volunteer Cup for the 13th time.

Cushendall: E Gillan; R McCambridge, M Burke, A Graffin; E Campbell (1-0), E McKillop, S Delargy; S McNaughton (0-1), A McNaughton; C McAllister, N McManus (0-9, 7 frees), C Carson (0-1); P McGill (0-3), Sean McAfee, C McNaughton (0-2). Twelve points from Stephen Maher helped Clough-Ballacolla to the Laois SHC title in O’Moore Park on Sunday.

Ballacolla came from six points down at the break and only took the lead for the first time with two minutes remaining when Maher landed his tenth of the day. He then added two more to secure Ballacolla their third championship success since 2009.

But Ballacolla improved hugely on the restart and points from Willie Hyland (3), Michael McEvoy, Willie Dunphy, Aidan Corby, Stephen Bergin and Robbie Phelan had them right back in contention.

Keenan and Dean Delaney responded for Camross but Ballacolla had the final say with Maher hitting the last four points of the game to get them over the line.
