Connacht Schools' Senior Cup Final Preview: The final of the Statoil Connacht Schools' Senior Cup today at Corinthian Park (4 p.m.) sees Garbally College, Ballinasloe, lining up for what could be their 44th title-winning game, with opponents Sligo Grammar hoping to take the crown for just the eighth time, although they did win back-to-back cups in 1999 and 2000.
It is the first meeting of the sides in the final since 1997, when Garbally triumphed and condemned the Sligo side to their fourth successive defeat in the final, three of them between 1995 and 1997 at the hands of today's opposition.
Sligo Grammar ended that losing sequence when they defeated St Joseph's College (The Bish), Galway, in the 1999 final and followed this up with victory over St Saran's College, Ferbane, the following year.
Garbally began their impressive tradition in the competition in its inaugural year in 1912/13 and apart from Blackrock College in Leinster, who will not participate in this year's Lansdowne Road final, no other school has lifted as many provincial titles.
Both schools have the opportunity to bring off a provincial double as they also meet in the Junior Cup final on March 19th at Crowley Park.
The junior and senior cup double honour, incidentally, has been achieved by only four schools with Garbally by far the most successful side with 24 wins, Sligo Grammar achieving the feat in 1961 and 1962.
Garbally knocked out St Saran's, Ferbane, in the last round to progress to today's final, while it took a last-gasp try from blind side flanker Simon Coulter to allow Sligo Grammar progress at the expense of Portumna after Portumna had led for most of the game. Sligo name an unchanged side for today with outside centre Brian Taylor captaining the side.
