St Joseph's, Garbally won the Irish Schools' Championship at Birr yesterday when they proved far too strong for the gallant Leinster champions, Presentation College Bray, in the final. Earlier in the day the Connacht champions had beaten Belfast's Methodist College 3 1/2-1 1/2, while Bray pipped St Augustine's, Dungarvan 3-2 in the semi-finals.
The stars for St Joseph's were Tom Deignan and Michael McHugh, both of whom earned maximum points for their college. Deignan beat Methody's Chris Campbell 3 and 2 in the semi-final and was always in control against Bray's Mark Flynn in the final which he won by 5 and 4. Michael McHugh won his semi-final tie against Methodist College's Ian Thompson by 5 and 4 and was even more impressive in the final when he beat David Flynn by 6 and 5. David Lewis was unbeaten for Bray. He beat Dungarvan's Paudie Morrissey by 3 and 2 in the semifinal and halved his final match with Garbally's Shane Barrett.
Dun Laoghaire members dominated the closing stages of the annual AIB Invitation Mixed Matchplay last week with victory going to Charlie and Anne Russell, who beat another local pair, Kevin and Anne McNicholas, 4 and 3 in the final.

The girls from the west of Ireland have been in marvellous form all summer and last week they added another trophy to their growing collection. On Tuesday last the Enniscrone girls won the All-Ireland Smurfit Junior Girls' Championship for the first time. Enniscrone, who have won the Connacht final for the past four years, beat Ulster finalists Royal Co Down in the semi-final and Leinster champions Howth in the final at Youghal.
