Garvan still scoring

What a week it has been for former Shelbourne soccer player Gerry Garvan

What a week it has been for former Shelbourne soccer player Gerry Garvan. His under-13 Home Farm team won the SFAI Troy Cup by beating Cherry Orchard in the final last Sunday week and then the following day Gerry led out his golf team in the inaugural Home Farm Johnny Giles Golf Classic at City West and he finished in second place.

But then Garvan, who was quite a player when he was with Shels nearly 20 years ago, is no stranger to winning. His under-13 soccer team have been unbeaten for the past three and a half years and he has been their manager all along that path of success. "They're a smashing bunch of lads," says Gerry.

But Gerry is no mean golfer either as he and his team of Joe Brophy, Gerry Buckley and Joe O'Reilly proved when amassing 92 points at City West. They finished just three points behind the winning Umbro team of John Courtney, Tony Judd - the professional at Forrest Little - Seβn Fagan and Christy O'Leary, the father of Leeds United manager Dave.

With Johnny Giles at the head of affairs it was not surprising the line up of 46 teams for the golf contained quite a few celebrity stars from the world of soccer. Names like Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, Mick Jones and Jimmy Lumsden, all former Leeds players, Nobby Stiles and Eamonn Dunphy from Manchester United, and, of course, Johnny Giles himself all added up to an autograph hunter's dream.
