MOTOR SPORT: Germany's Jutta Kleinschmidt on Sunday became the first woman to win the Paris-Dakar rally at the end of the last 25-km timed stage in Dakar. The Mitsubishi driver beat Japanese team mate Hiroshi Masuoka by two minutes and 39 seconds, while Frenchman JeanLouis Schlesser, winner for the last two years, finished third in his Buggy, 23:29 adrift. Kleinschmidt's triumph brought Mitsubishi a record sixth win in the event.
RALLYING: Finland's Tommi Makinen roared to a hat-trick of victories after Colin McRae suffered more Monte Carlo Rally misfortune today. Makinen triumphed after overnight leader McRae retired having lost more than 13 minutes on today's opening stage with a throttle problem in his Ford Focus. The Mitsubishi driver cruised home by a minute from McRae's team-mate Carlos Sainz with Francois Delecour more than a minute further adrift in third on his debut in the Focus.
CYCLING: Ciaran Power yesterday impressed his Linda McCartney team management in finishing a fine 23rd overall in the Tour Down Under in Australia, his first assignment of the year. The 24year-old was leading rider of the vegetarian squad, leaving more experienced team-mates in his wake during the six-day event and registering three top10 placings in the process. The race was won for the second time in three years by home favourite and former Tour de France yellow jersey Stuart O'Grady.
ATHLETICS: Dublin's Derval O'Rourke (University College) won 60m hurdles gold at the Scottish Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall yesterday. Shauna Colhoun (Lifford AC) won the long jump title, clearing 5.79 metres in the first round. Anne Maria Larkins (Tullamore) retained the 3,000m title once again, running away from the opposition to win in 10.03.92.
CRICKET: Sri Lanka were facing a heavy defeat and series loss after being forced to follow on in the third and final Test against South Africa at Centurion Park. The Sri Lankans made a spirited showing in their second innings, reaching 184 for three at the close of the second day. But they remained a long way short of repairing the damage caused by being dismissed for 119 in their first knock and at stumps still needed another 75 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
FORMULA ONE: Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer was taken to hospital by helicopter after suffering a serious crash at the Montmelo circuit at Barcelona yesterday. Italian Badoer was conscious when he was removed from the car and taken to the Catalan General Hospital.
