Gilroy keen that Dublin retain top flight status

DUBLIN MANAGER Pat Gilroy will be asked the same question three times this season.

DUBLIN MANAGER Pat Gilroy will be asked the same question three times this season.

The first occasion was at the press conference to announce his appointment, it came again yesterday (as did a similar answer) and he will be asked one more time around August or maybe even September.

Is this still a position he views as a method of relaxation?

“If you can’t enjoy this you can’t enjoy anything. It is great to be involved with guys out training. As you are trying things and getting it quicker than in a club situation it is very encouraging. When you are starting to see people doing what you have been working on it is very satisfying. The whole training and the preparation is very enjoyable.”

Gilroy is relying on Derry to beat Donegal at home and his Dublin charges to overcome Westmeath at Parnell Park to secure their Division One status this Sunday. Mayo and Tyrone can also still be relegated with Tomás Ó Flatharta’s Westmeath, who have lost all six matches in their national league campaign.

The main returns for Dublin are Alan Brogan and Ciarán Whelan with Dermot Connolly (shoulder) and Ross McConnell (knee) making way after encouraging performances in the recent draw with Kerry.

Barry Cahill also comes back into the half-back line for Bryan Cullen, who is struggling to guarantee his place for the first time since breaking into the panel, as Ger Brennan returns to centre back and this week’s captain Paul Griffin goes to wing back. Eamonn Fennell (appendectomy) and Collie Moran (hip) remain unavailable until May.

“We would prefer to stay up because the games you get are great quality in Division One,” adds Gilroy. “Naturally, we would prefer to stay up. If we go well during the summer then you would have to live with that.

“We have gotten an awful lot out of this league campaign in terms of players. We have seen options there and it has become seriously difficult to pick the team.

“That’s what we wanted. We wanted to win every game. That hasn’t happened but we have learned a lot about players during that campaign.”

The Dublin under-21 footballers are training with the senior panel this week, but Paddy Andrews, Cian O’Sullivan and Kevin Nolan are not being considered by Gilroy at least until after the All-Ireland semi-final against Cork in Semple Stadium tomorrow week. Gilroy has also confirmed the panel will be trimmed to 34 or 35 next week.

Meanwhile, Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has made seven changes for Sunday’s Division One clash with Mayo at Castlebar.

Suspensions form a central theme, with Ryan McMenamin returning at centre back following an eight-week ban, while Tommy McGuigan starts a controversial four-week sanction.

McGuigan may appeal the suspension imposed upon him by the Central Hearings Committee meeting on Wednesday, after being found guilty of striking Derry defender Seán Marty Lockhart with the knee.

In his absence, older brother Brian comes into the half forward line for his first start of the season.

Also in attack, Joe McMahon returns from injury, and Niall Gormle gets the nod in the right corner, with Colm Cavanagh and Aidan Cassidy dropping to the bench.

Enda McGinley has recovered from injury, and returns to his midfield role, with Ryan Mellon switching to attack, to the exclusion of Colm McCullagh.

At the back, Dermot Carlin replaces Cathal McCarron in the left corner, while Seán O’Neill is the player to make way for McMenamin. And in goal, John Devine continues the rotation by coming in for Johnny Curran.
