MEN'S HOCKEY: Glennane's weekend could not be described as anything other than extremely satisfactory.
Not only did they nick a place in the fourth round of the Irish Senior Cup, defeating Monkstown 3-2, but YMCA also did them a favour in taking a point off league leaders Three Rock Rovers in a 2-2 draw.
Overall, Glenanne chase Rovers with three games in hand but 10 points adrift.
Rovers, however, continue to look comfortable and took the lead against YMCA through Gary Ringwood. Andrew Walker equalised for YMCA before half-time.
Graeme Dowling knocked another in for Rovers before goalkeeper Rob McMullen pulled off a vital save from Peter McConnell to prevent YMCA going 3-1 down. McMullen's save was something of a turning point, Walker nabbing his second to level the scores and the match.
But it was Monkstown who had to suffer the greater disappointment when Alan Goulding popped up to score the winner in the dying seconds of the match in their cup match at St Andrew's.
The sides were drawn at 2-2 with David Jenkins and Cliff Bailey hitting Monkstown's scores and John Goulding striking twice for Glenanne. Glenanne now face UCC away in the fourth round of the competition on January 25th.
Elsewhere Avoca managed three goals through Enda and Daragh Gallanagh and captain Rory Kirwan but still came out losers against six-goal Railway Union while Pembroke against stuttered going down 2-1 to Corinthians.
The home side scored the winner in the second half off a second phase short corner following goals from Colin Stewart and Pembroke's Ronan Gormley.
Pembroke, who face Rovers next week in the Mills Cup, will have doubts over captain Duncan McKeen, who left the pitch with a back problem.
